The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a multi-district, grassroots leadership development program of member districts organized into regional divisions in various parts of the world. It is not an official program of Rotary International and is not under its control. The RLI seeks to have Rotary Clubs in member districts identify those Rotarians who seem to have the POTENTIAL for future club leadership (not necessarily as club presidents) and provide those so identified with a quality education in Rotary knowledge and leadership skills for voluntary organizations.

Random Thoughts About Leadership

(This feature will appear in most of our monthly EBulletins. All Rotarians are welcome to submit comments and thoughts about leadership.)

"As an organization, Rotary's needs for leadership are massive and are manifest in a series of ways," said Past R.I. Treasurer/Director Ian Riseley of Australia.  Ian cites the problem of many clubs having difficulty recruiting presidents-elect and districts recruiting governors nominee. He noticed that clubs often have to "recycle" their past officers. Why does Rotary, with so many outstanding business and professional persons have these problems?

Said PRIT Ian,"...what recycling does indicate is that the club in question probably hasn't taken the steps to encourage and prepare other club members to take on these important roles. Furthermore, less experienced Rotarians are often reluctant to put their names forward because they are not sure what the task entails or whether they have the requisite skills and support to succeed. So you can understand why I believe that training and encouragement with leadership for Rotarians is to the ultimate benefit of all Rotary clubs and districts around the world, and the Rotary Leadership Institute assists in meeting that need." (Remarks at the RLI ANZO Breakfast in Christchurch, New Zealand-see below).

INAUGURAL RLI- ANZO REGION BREAKFAST HELD AT CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND ZONE INSTITUTE
Here is a report by PDG Cathy Roth, Intl. RLI Regional Vice-Chair for the ANZO REGION:

125 Rotarians and partners attended the inaugural RLI breakfast for the ANZO region (Australia, New Zealand and Oceania), held at Rydges Hotel, Christchurch, New Zealand on November 22, in conjunction with the Zones 7A and 8 Institute. Attendees were welcomed by RID John Lawrence, the Convener of the Institute, who spoke of how thrilled he was to see so many in attendance and of the importance of ensuring that Rotary has knowledgeable and capable leaders in the future.

Joining Director John as special guests were R.I. Director Lars-Olaf Fredri    ksson and Nina of Finland, Past R.I. Treasurer/Director Barry Thompson of Australia, Past R.I. Treasurer/Director Ian Riseley and Juliet of Australia and the selection of the Nominating Committee for R.I. Director from Zone 7 for 2010 - 2012, Stuart and Adrienne Heal from New Zealand.

As Keynote Speaker, PRIT Ian spoke on "Rotary's Leadership Needs and Opportunities", emphasizing the need for us all to seize the opportunities  provided by the Rotary Leadership Institute for increasing Rotary knowledge and leadership skills, to ensure that Rotary will live on strongly and effectively.  He commended those involved in bringing the RLI to the region and especially those who have now implemented it within their Districts.

PDG Beryl Robinson, Division Chair for New Zealand and the Pacific islands thanked PRIT Ian and presented him with wines from Australia and New Zealand to represent our combined meeting.

The breakfast was the first time all RLI - ANZO region member Districts had had a chance to meet together and for each of the four Divisions chairs, the member Districts, the newest member Districts, and all trained Faculty to be recognized.  It is hoped that the breakfasts will be annual events at Zone Institutes in the ANZO Region.
