The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a multi-district, grassroots leadership development program of member districts organized into regional divisions in various parts of the world. It is not an official program of Rotary International and is not under its control. The RLI seeks to have Rotary Clubs in member districts identify those Rotarians who seem to have the POTENTIAL for future club leadership (not necessarily as club presidents) and provide those so identified with a quality education in Rotary knowledge and leadership skills for voluntary organizations.

In Memoriam

We mourn the passing of Joan Wilkinson, wife of Past R.I. President and Trustee Wilfred J. Wilkinson of Trenton, Ontario and a member of the RLI Senior Leaders Advisory Board. Joan was a wonderful, gracious woman and a great support for her husband in all ways. Those who knew her always saw her warmth and kindness. She will be greatly missed.

Quote of the Month

"Any jackass can kick a barn down, but it takes a carpenter to build one".
Former U.S. President Lyndon Johnson

Editor's Note: President Johnson was a down to earth and plain spoken leader. He criticized all the negative attitudes of some so-called leaders and called for them to rather be "builders".

Random Thoughts about Leadership

The word "courage" has been bandied about lately in connection with politics and leadership. Why would leaders need courage to be successful in their leadership? Perhaps this relates to the problem of change. In so many Rotary Clubs, there are a group of long term members who oppose change. It is not that are not good Rotarians, they are just used to the way things are. A new club president has a choice-do what has always been done in the club (the safe route) or propose new constructive ideas that may raise the ire of the long term leaders and others (the "courage" route). Since the club president has only one year to serve and wants peace and harmony, the safe route is often his/her choice. If Rotary is to progress and meet the challenges of the future, quite often the courage route is necessary. With good leadership skills, the club leaders can convince the members that a constructive change is necessary. RLI has a course session in such strategies.

Welcome New Division and Districts

RLI is pleased to welcome the new District 1470 Denmark Division. This is the first member district of RLI in Denmark and hopefully will spur RLI growth throughout that important country. The District Governor of 1470 is Peter Staermose and the Chair of the Division is PDG Kils Ove Jensen. The district also includes the territory of Greenland.

We are also pleased to welcome District 3600 as a member of the Korea Division. The Agreement of membership was signed by District Governor Woo Kyung Lee and District Governor Elect Kee Yoon Jang. The Chair of the Division is PRID Kwang Tae Kim, who organized a very successful faculty orientation in Seoul last December.

We also warmly welcome additional districts in India, including District 3090 in the Northern India Division, Districts 3170 and 3190 in the Central India Division and District 3211 in the South India/Sri Lanka Division. The Chairs of those divisions respectively are PP Atul Dev, PDG Rajendra Rai and PDG K.S. Pillai.

In addition to those Chairs, we thank PDG Rekha Shetty, Coordinator for South India and Sri Lanka and PDG Subhash Saraf, Expansion Coordinator, both in the all India RLI organization.

Wargo Tours India and Sri Lanka for RLI

RLI International Vice-Chair for Training, PDG Frank Wargo, spent most of February in India and Sri Lanka conducting faculty orientation programs and assisting at courses in Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore, Colombo, Bhubaneshwar and New Delhi. He also represented RLI at the Annual Meeting of South Asia Divisions in Mumbai. RLI has made great strides in South Asia which organization includes districts in Nepal, Sri Lanka and 28 of the 31 districts in India. See the many leaders of RLI in that region listed on the RLI website division list.

Around the RLI World

• The India RLI Organization website address is now www.rlisa.org

The Sunshine Division conducted RLI courses in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands in January. A large number of Puerto Rico Rotarians participated in the course sessions.

The South India Division conducted a faculty orientation and courses in Payyanur, Kerala, India in January.

• After consultation with R.I. staff, the RLI logo has been clarified. Some of the logos used around the world have been distorted by constant copying from one source or another. RLI is posting the correct logos in various sizes on the materials website and all divisions are urged to download them for their use.

• The Israel Division has conducted courses in two locations in that country under the leadership of Division Chair, DG Uri Geiger and PDGs Ran Linn and Yael Lazarus. More RLI activity is planned for that division.

• In February, the Japan Division under the leadership of Division Chair PRID Yoshikazu Minamisono, conducted a second Part I course for District 2710. As previously noted, the RLI curriculum has been translated into Japanese and is posted on the materials website along with other translations.

• April 24 will be the date of a Part I course in Jackson, Michigan, USA, for the Great Lakes Division, Chaired by PDG Renee Merchant.

RLI PHILOSOPHY

“Having leadership skills does not alone assure good Rotary leadership. An effective Rotary leader must ALSO have Rotary knowledge, perspective about where Rotary has been, where it is now going and a vision of what Rotary can be.”
