March 2012
The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a multi-district, grassroots leadership development program of member districts organized into regional divisions throughout the world. It is not an official program of Rotary International and is not under its control. The RLI seeks to have Rotary Clubs in member districts identify those Rotarians who seem to have the POTENTIAL for future club leadership (not necessarily as club presidents) and provide those so identified with a quality education in Rotary knowledge and leadership skills for voluntary organizations.

Odds and Ends about RLI

What is the International RLI? It is the umbrella organization that coordinates the activities of RLI worldwide. It is NOT a division, but provides resources and support to all divisions. All divisions are created by agreement with International RLI and the divisions are subject to the general policies of International RLI. Until about 2001, both the Home Division activities (now the Northeast America Division) and national and international matters were handled by the Home Division, but at that time the functions were divided and the International RLI was created as a separate entity.

The International Curriculum Committee Holds Meeting in Orlando, FL

30 RLI leaders from twelve divisions and six countries participated in the Annual Intl. Curriculum Committee Meeting in Orlando, Florida, USA from January 27-29. Countries represented at the meeting were Argentina, Canada, India, Japan, Mexico and USA. The group divided into six study committees to consider curriculum needs in that many course areas. The work of the committee will lead to the recommended RLI curriculum for 2012-15. In addition to the three Part basic curriculum, the committee also prepared recommended graduate seminars materials for those completing the 3 Part program.

Past R.I. President and twice TRF Chair Luis Giay addressed the opening session of the meeting. Curriculum changes were discussed to deal with changes in R.I. and The Foundation, especially that part of the Future Vision Plan. Attention was also given, among other subjects, to new approaches to Rotary membership.

The final publication of the recommended curriculum will occur on or before June 1 and will become available to the voluntary translators as soon as possible before that date. All curriculum outlines, etc. are posted on the RLI materials website. RLI has conducted courses in at least twenty languages and more languages will be needed.

Chair of the Curriculum Committee is PDG Gary Israel who is the Chair of the host division, the Sunshine Division. Secretary and Editor of the Committee is PDG Bevin Wall, former Chair and now Executive Director of the Zone 33 Division. Members of the Organizing Committee, in addition to PDG Israel, were Brenda Wendt, Debbie Maymon, and PDG Douglas Maymon. RLI Intl. Executive Director Michael Rabasca and Intl. Chair David Linett coordinated the work of the committee for the Intl. RLI.
