March 2012
The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a multi-district, grassroots leadership development program of member districts organized into regional divisions throughout the world. It is not an official program of Rotary International and is not under its control. The RLI seeks to have Rotary Clubs in member districts identify those Rotarians who seem to have the POTENTIAL for future club leadership (not necessarily as club presidents) and provide those so identified with a quality education in Rotary knowledge and leadership skills for voluntary organizations.

In Memoriam

RLI mourns the death of Past R.I. President Glenn Estess, Sr. of Alabama, USA. President Estess served as President of Rotary International in 2004-5 and was a member of the RLI Senior Leaders Advisory Board. He was an inspiration to a number of RLI leaders who served with him on his Board of Directors. Our condolences go to his wife Mary and the Estess family.

Quote of the Month

"One of the least effective ways to teach is to stand in an auditorium and deliver a monologue on facts"  Professor Eric Mazur of the Physics Department of Harvard University, speaking at a symposium on learning and teaching at Harvard.

Random Thoughts about Leadership

It is interesting that a physics professor would be challenging the usual method of university teaching for college students. While most in RLI accept that lecturing is not effective for adult learners, some often say that in RLI courses that are "fact based", that lectures are important. Professor Mazur offered his opinion with some live examples in teaching physics - what could be more fact based than physics. We will be working on this issue in the days to come. Your comments are always welcome.

30 new faculty members plus division leaders participated in a faculty orientation session at Istanbul, Turkey on February 25. The orientation was preceded on the day before with a meeting of division leaders to discuss the organization of the new division and the logistics of holding courses, etc. Both events were conducted at the WOW Hotel Airport in Istanbul with representatives from all three member districts (covering all of Turkey).
